Birgit Abels is professor of Cultural Musicology at the Department of Musicology of the University of Göttingen. She also is an external faculty member at the Department of Musicology at the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
Her research interests include identity negotiation through music and music and post-colonial theory. The geographic foci of her research are the Pacific Ocean (particularly Micronesia), North India, and the Southeast Asian island world. Currently, she is developing a research project entitled "Aural Serialization: The Music of Hindi Dharmic TV-Serials".
